THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE SUGAR CANES in HOF 2023

Ebrahim Ashrafpour’s debut feature film, THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE SUGAR CANES, will be a part of the Official Selection of the 57th Hof International Film Festival (October 24th to 29th, 2023 / Hof, Germany) in the special section, “Films as a Catalyst for Change: Politics, Social Issues and the Environment”.

Hofer Filmtage was founded in 1967 by a group of young German filmmakers, including Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, and Heinz Badewitz. Hof International Film Festival (Hofer Filmtage), which was named “H.ome O.f F.ilms” by Wim Wenders, has become one of Germany’s most important film festivals, focusing on discovering up-and-coming talent and includes a forum for German and international independent filmmakers.

THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE SUGAR CANES delves into the plights of a family from point of view of a young boy, when his dad, a protesting worker at Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Argo-Industry Company in Khuzestan Province, Iran, is arrested for his activities. As director explains, “For years, the workers, employed by Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Argo-Industry Company in Khuzestan Province, have been protesting against the exploitative system, disregarding their rights and demands. As symbols of resistance against injustice and cruelty all over the country, they face constant threats, arrests, imprisonments, job dismissals and so on. While the system tries to ignore them, they go on with their fight against capitalism and exploitation…”

THE WIND… has participated in Olympia 2022 (Greek Film Critics Association Award), Dhaka 2023, Istanbul Universal Kids 2023 and Hof 2023.
